A Message to Readers:
During a 2005 childbirth conference, the keynote speaker, while discussing the nursing shortage, asked, “Who will answer the call lights?” That question planted the seed for Nurses on the Run~Why They Come, Why They Stay. My goal in compiling this book was four-fold: to encourage others to become nurses, to inspire practicing nurses to remain active in their professions, to offer suggestions to help remedy the nursing shortage, and to lessen the guilt of my planned 2008 exodus.
I hoped for stories from nurses young and old, new and veteran, men and women, American-born and foreign-born, hospital-employed and community-employed; and I planned to include information about the nursing shortage with words of hope for the future.
Stories arrived in my inbox. Stories that touched my heart, made me laugh, made me cry, and made me proud to be a nurse. And that seed, planted in October, 2005 flourished into more than I’d envisioned, with an unexpected result. I would not accomplish my fourth goal. Because what I hadn’t anticipated was that, prior to publication, the stories would inspire one nurse to continue her nursing career. Me.
